Statement Sums Involving 2 Digit Number Multiplication

In statement sum we are given a statement. We have to analyse the statement and then take appropriate action.

Following steps are required to solve the statement

1. Read the statement carefully

2. Find the values that are given

3. Find the quantity which is required

4. Then perform the process to reach the desired result.

Let us consider the following example;

Shopkeeper had 5 boxes and each box had 62 pens. How many pens did the shopkeeper had in all?

1. We will first analyse the statement

2. We will find the values that are given

In the question it is given that

Shopkeeper had 5 boxes and each box had 62 pens.

Number of pens in 1 box = 62

Number of boxes = 5

3. We will find the quantity which is required

In the question it is asked that

How many pens did the shopkeeper had in all?

To find number of pens

We will perform multiplication as we are supposed to find the no. of pens in all the boxes

62 X 5  = ?

We will perform the required operation

The multiplication can be done as follows

Step 1:

Multiply the digit at ones place

2 ones X 5 = 10 ones

As 10 is greater than 9 or we can say that 10 is a two digit number

We will write 0 ones in the ones column and carry 1 tens to the tens column.

Step 2:

Multiply the digit at tens place

6 tens X 5 = 30 tens

Now we add the carried over tens from the step 1

30 tens + 1 tens (carried over) = 31 tens

Write 1 in the tens column and 3 in the hundreds column.

Answer = 310

Hence the answer is 310 pens

Hence number of pens are 310.
